Sydney

Sydney was found July 11th running in the middle of a street in the Old Sixth Ward dragging a 12 foot long thick black rope tied around her neck that been used to tie her up in a yard. Absolutely terrified and ran like a greyhound each time a volunteer tried to sweet talk her and offer her food to gain her trust. After dodging traffic crossing Washington Ave. and running from our volunteer through 1st Ward for 45 minutes, she eventually accepted food as the volunteer watched from a block away. She hid between a warehouse and a concrete barricade and her rope got caught and that is how our volunteer was able to catch her.

Our baby girl was flea infestation beyond words-thousands and thousands of fleas-skin and bones and clearly had been abused as she crouched her whole body each time you reached to pet her. Enlarged nipples indicate she has had a litter, although not that recently. Capstar and bath with Dawn took care of the fleas immediately, and antibiotics have since taken care of a secondary infection she had from the fleas. She may have been on the run for awhile as she did nothing but sleep for the first few days at her foster home.

By the second day, she crouched her head only and then progressively less when you reached for her, and now doesn't do it at all. By the third day, she knew her name and felt safe enough to lean into our volunteer's husband and our volunteer and look up in adoration. Within 4-5 days she felt a kinship with the 4 other dogs at her foster's house and began getting excited when her fosters would get home. Now she greets her fosters along with the rest of the pack with smiles and a full-body wag. She's definitely one of the sweetest and smartest dogs we have ever known.

Sydney is between 1-3 years old and is totally house trained-she has never had an accident in the house and was only crated for about 5 days, before her foster parents knew she was no trouble at all. Sydney is great with other dogs. We are not totally certain how she is with cats or children, but we would suspect she would be fine just because of her sweet temperament. She is very relational and puts her head in your lap or sidles up to you when she wants to be petted. She knows how to sit with verbal command and hand signal and her foster have even seen her use a full length mirror to watch people in the room. She loves her night time milk bone treat and loves to have her tummy rubbed...

She is a gem--calm, quiet, friendly and only barks when the postman comes. An absolute gem...
