We feel it is time for Sugar Ray Leonard to get his reward: a wonderful, new family that will adore him and treat him like a king and help to erase all the years of pain and loneliness that he suffered out on the streets. Sugar Ray was a dog who probably didn’t have much time left in this world, but he really struggled out on the streets to stay alive. That is why he is named after a fighter. The vets say by examining him, that he apparently struggled for many years, and that is heartbreaking. But he finally knows peace, security and contentment, probably for the first time ever. It has been a long road to recovery and we almost lost him during his heartworm treatment. But Gail, his foster angel, has taken remarkable care of him and he thinks she hung the moon. It was agreed his body could not continue the traditional HW treatment, so after several months of allowing his body to heal from the terrible effects, he has started receiving small doses of Ivermectin and he will continue his treatment that way. Due to his past history and then having to remain isolated in a crate for so many months to heal, Sugar Ray is quite timid and tentative with new people until he gets to know them. We are working on getting his comfort and trust level up and he has made tremendous progress. You’d have to peek through the window to watch him with Gail or me to see the real Sugar Ray, who is extremely loving, playful and loyal and just loves to bury his head in you and try to cuddle up against you. He also loves other dogs, especially his foster sibling Darla, who he often shares his crate/bed with, and boy do they love to play. In the beginning, it seemed he preferred women to men, but he has gotten very lovable with boyfriend, Tim, so we are glad to see that. We are looking for a very special home for Sugar Ray. A home with kind people who know how to be leaders with their dogs and who will give Sugar Ray the time and space to become the dog Gail and I already know he can be. Sugar Ray needs confident people who can relay that confidence to him. A home where he will be an important member of the family and not just stuck out in the backyard, who will be taken out on walks and to the park and live amongst you. He’s already spent his life alone, and we would not do that to him again. He is housebroken and uses a doggie door and is very well-behaved. Once he gains your trust, I promise he will be the most loyal and loving dog you could ever want. He is so grateful for this second chance. Are you the family who can make his dreams come true?
