Ajax recently found a foster mom and foster brother (he gets along very well with Ernie, the fox terrier), and we have been able to learn more about his personality now that we can see how he interacts in a home. Simply put, he is wonderful. He is a completely affectionate dog - exuberant and excited to see his person whenever he isn't in contact with them, and giving them the canine equivalent of a long hug whenever he is touching them. His love language can be summed up in one word: SNUGGLES!! He loves to do the classic lean, to put his head on your shoulder if you happen to be in a position where he can maneuver that, and if someone happens to be sitting down, he will crawl into their lap (whether he fits or not!). He will lay next to you while you're reading, pace with you if you pace on the phone, and will also shamelessly follow you to the bathroom and wait on the bathmat while you are in the shower. This is a dog who loves his person, and wants more than anything to find that person who will love him forever.

Toy habits: puppy playful. Ajax loves to play with toys (especially toys that make squeaky noises!) - but, unlike some retriever mixes, he is not mouthy nor does he engage in much recreational chewing (not with his toys, and thankfully not with shoes, or household objects, either!). He also likes to take the toys out of the toybox and stack them in one place (eg, on his foster brother's bed) and then move them all one by one again to the next place (e.g., his crate) 

 

Potty habits: gentlemanly. Ajax is nearly completely potty trained. He will hold it while in his crate. When he is not in his crate, he will pace back and forth by the door to let you know he needs to go outside. 

 

Indoor habits: Velcro-y and sweet. Ajax is definitely what we would call a Velcro dog - he wants to be near you at all times. Currently, he sleeps in his crate, instead of with his foster mom and brother; he is a good sport about this and quiets down with just a little bit of whining, but would prefer to be able to snuggle with his family. He loves his crate, and can be left alone in his crate for a half-day (we have not tried leaving him alone for longer than that yet) and he will be content and not cry. (which is an open-wire crate all around, no plastic), and is very well-behaved while inside it, but he does not like when anyone puts anything on top of his crate, nor does he like being in the plastic crates where it is harder to see what is going on around him (those scare him and make him cry). Ajax is, like all puppies, still floppy and uncoordinated, so there has been some sliding around on wood floors and taking turns too fast such that he runs into walls - he should probably go to a home where there aren't too many breakables at knee level or below. 

 

Outdoor habits: low-maintenance and agreeable. Ajax is amazingly low-maintenance outside. He potties quickly, naturally walks on heel (because he doesn't want to be too far from his person), is a little cautious around other dogs, but completely submissive and friendly, and while we haven't tried him off-leash outside of a dog park, when off-leash he does not run, he just stays close to his person and tries to get close for some snuggles.
