Red is an amazing dog. He was leader of the pack of some Heights street dogs for many, many months, if not longer. He had many friends in the neighborhood that looked out for him and put out food. But, unfortunately, he also had enemies, from those who could have cared less as he and his pack crossed the road, to those who threw rocks at him, and worst of all those who called BARC on him. One can only guess at the horrors this boy has seen.When trying to get Red to come in, you could tell that he had known both good and bad people but he was not sure what we were. He would look at us in wonder and come so close to getting near, but would decide better safe than sorry and would casually walk off.At one point when traps were set in the attempt to catch some of the pack, Red sat in front of the entrance and would not let the others enter. He is a true protector of those he loves. But upon the last setting of the traps, Red was the first one in. He must have known luck was running out. Barc had been called twice that week and was setting to get him. Miraculously, Red transformed almost immediately. He has clearly been someone's dog. Though at bit unsure at the beginning, he is now a happy go lucky, incredibly loving boy. When you walk into his room at the boarding place, his tail immediately starts to wag and he even jumps up with joy to see you. Soon he is rolling over for belly rubs. Quite different from the boy just trying to survive along 610.
Much to our surprise, Red checked out to be heartworm negative. That does not just happen in Houston, clearly he had been on preventative. He already knows sit, loves to play fetch, enjoys rides in the car and has not had an accident while in boarding. This is one good boy.
Red is enjoying his time in boarding as he gets to play with the other dogs in daycare. He has a cool, calm demeanor that the other dogs just naturally seem to follow. He is a leader without needing to fight for it. He is just so amazing that the other dogs give him their respect. He also gets along well with the kids that go to visit him regularly.
Red is probably around 2 years old, vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. Though he is happy in boarding he would be happier back in a home, whether foster or forever.
