Meet Giselle, a/k/a Gisi! Some of you may remember Gisi. She is the beautiful sweet Rottweiler that was picked up by BARC (Houston Pound) the day before New Year's Eve. BARC picked her up off the streets and called us because she was injured. They told us that she had a broken leg and they couldn't treat her. Scout's Honor immediately stepped up and got her to our emergency vet right away. Once at the emergency vet we found out just how serious Giselle's condition was. The x-ray revealed that Giselle's leg was broken because she had been shot with a 9mm handgun! Gisi had been shot in the neck and the bullet went down through her neck and through her chest cavity and ended up in her leg where it shattered the humerus bone. The vet said that she was extremely lucky because the bullet somehow managed to miss every vital part of her body. He was surprised that she lived. She immediately underwent surgery to remove the bullet and fragments, but the vet was not able to repair her leg because of the extensive damage done by the bullet. He told us that we could amputate her leg or send her to a specialist to have the leg reconstructed. We just couldn't bear to amputate this sweet girl's leg if she had a chance to keep it. A few days later, Giselle saw an orthopedic specialist who determined that they could save her leg, but it would be a complicated surgery. We also found out from the additional x-rays that this poor baby had been shot before and one of her back legs had been broken at some point in the past as well. Our sweet girl has endured an awful lot. Her surgery was performed and her leg was reconstructed with a metal plate and pins. After a few months of rehab, Gisi is up and getting around well. This baby girl must have a guardian angel looking out for her because she was so lucky at every step of her journey, from BARC picking her up so soon after being shot, to the bullet missing all of her vitals, to us getting her to the vet so quickly, and finally her leg being able to be saved and her being able to use it again.  Unless you knew her story, you would have no idea that she had endured such trauma to her leg or that she has a metal plates and pins in it.  Gisi does not have any restrictions to her activity and her surgeon said she should not have any troubles with her leg. 

Gisi is an absolute doll! She takes a bit to warm up (how could you blame her after all she's been through - she has been surrounded her whole life by the scrum of the earth), but once she does, you have never seen a more loving and affectionate little lady. Once she gets to know you, she will become your shadow wanting nothing more than to be close to you. She is 100% house-trained, is just fine by herself all day long while her foster parents are at work, is super laid back and is very smart. She is currently sharing a house with her 4 foster canine siblings, 2 brothers and 2 sisters (all rotties and rottie mixes), and gets along well with all of them. She likes to play and run around in the backyard with them. You can tell that Gisi doesn't know much about the world because she is always watching her foster siblings with curiosity, as if she is learning the world for the first time.  It's sad to think that for the first time in this little lady's life she is being able to just be a dog, learning to play, what toys are and of course her favorite - TREATS!  Gisi and her foster mom have a ritual where Gisi sits for a treat and gives her a high five with each paw before taking her treats.  It's the cutest thing! 

 

Gisi is a petite Rottie at about 80 lbs. She is up to date on all vaccinations, spayed and micro-chipped.
