D.D., a/k/a Gracie, is a SUPER sweet dog that had no chance until Scout's Honor Rescue, with the help of extremely generous donors, stepped in. Poor D.D. had everything going against her; she is older (6-7 years), going blind and ended up at BARC (Houston pound) after being picked up in a bad part of town as a stray. The vet tech at BARC told us that she was very sweet and he tested her with other dogs and she was good with them. D.D. was also spending her time in the tech's office instead of a kennel so they could buy her more time and we were told that she never had an accident in his office. After hearing about how sweet she was and that she would be euthanized if no one came to her aide her, we knew we had to help.
She is now safe and in good hands. Upon first meeting D.D. you instantly realize how calm and sweet she is. She is a very low key dog that likes attention and just wags her little nub when you talk to her. She is almost completely blind, but she does see light. She has been to an eye specialist and she has retinal degeneration, but there is nothing that can be done to reverse it. She's just fine though and gets around with no problem.
Gracie is pretty independent for being mostly blind. She's memorized the path from her room to the back door and has no problem finding her way there and back on her own... in fact, sometimes she's so excited she's running through the house to the back door. She waits patiently with her canine foster sister, and knows when the door is open by the sound. When she's done with her business, she finds her own way to the door and knows the steps to go inside. She loves to roll around in the grass and explore. She also does very well on a leash, which is a great way to lead her around if you've moved the furniture and she has to learn a new "path" around the house.
Gracie is a big, laid-back love bug who loves to lie down next to you and get her ears and belly rubbed. She is a low energy dog that still has a lot of playfulness and curiosity... just in short bursts. She gets along well with other dogs. She's not really sure what cats are all about, and half the time she doesn't even see them, but she's learned not to get too close to things that hiss.
Most of all, Gracie love meal time!! She'll follow you into the kitchen and start smiling and jumping around even before you get the food out. If you ask her is she's ready to eat, she gets very excited, even turning in circles to let you know how "hungry" she is.
Gracie deserves a family who will be conscientious of her special needs as she learns to rely more on her sense of sound and smell instead of her eyes. She will do well in a less active home where objects and toys are not constantly moved around or left on the floor. Also, a lot of movement can be jarring for her and she prefers to be greeted on her face first, where she can still vaguely see you.
She's only about 50lbs and is a true "pocket rott". She's spayed, micro-chipped and up to date on vaccination.
