Blossom is a sweet female Rottweiler that we rescued yesterday afternoon. After the big BARC pull (over 35 animals) we were not going to take anymore animals in, but we had to help this girl. Blossom was picked up by BARC Sunday night after apparently being hit by a car. She had to sit all night at BARC in pain until the morning when they were able to send a plea out. Her left rear leg was very swollen and was just dangling. We knew she would never make it out of BARC so we rushed her to our emergency vet where they took x-rays and got her on some good pain meds to make her comfortable. What the x-rays showed was hard to see. Her left femur is literally shattered, and her pelvis is fractured in about 5-6 places. Upon discovering this we immediately took her to an orthopedic specialist for an evaluation. The specialist determined that she can be saved, but will need a very extensive surgery. Her femur will need a rod placed in it with external plates to secure it all. Her pelvis will need to be screwed together and plated as well.
After her surgery she will need to be in a foster home so that someone can help her through her recovery. She just can't go to boarding after this kind of surgery. The good news is that the vets say she should be able to walk almost immediately after she goes home (she's really underweight which will help her recovery actually), albeit with assistance and a sling under her to make sure she doesn't fall.
The amazing thing is even through all her pain and discomfort, she is the calmest and sweetest girl.
